Zanshin became the leader of a ronin group in the Lion lands governed by Akodo Odawara. Due to the conflict with the Scorpion Clan in 1199, Lord Odawara had raised the taxes, leading his peasants to poverty. The resident monk Taizu persuaded Zanshin to conceal rice for the peasants, and it was the monk who told the peasants they were right to resist their lord's taxes. When two samurai sent by Odawara found the rice cache, they were slain by Zanshin and his men. In retribution twenty peasant were executed. The Emerald MagistrateIkoma Kiyomako, who had fought alongside Zanshin in the battlefield, was sent to investigate. She exposed the ronin group, but allowed them to leave, reporting all of the bandits fled when they were confronted by an Emerald Magistrate. Kiyomako brought to justice the monk Taizu.
