Yoritomo Kitao, captain of the Bitter Flower, became the Mantis Clan Champion upon the assassination of Yoritomo Aramasu. The fact that she conspired with Bayushi Kamnan to assassinate Aramasu was unknown to most at the time. She held the position as Champion until the Mantis Civil War when the daughter of Yoritomo, Yoritomo Kumiko took the position from her.
[edit] Yoritomo Elite Guard
During her reign as Mantis Clan Champion Kitao did not trust the Yoritomo Elite Guard and would assign them to be used as mercenaries frequently. There were rumors that Kitao did not trust the guard, but feared to disband them because of their connection to Yoritomo. (Samurai p. 50)

Kitao was corrupted in the Rain of Blood and sacked the City of Rememberance. After this she allied with Garen Hawthorne who gave her one of his ships, the Eternal to use as the flagship of the Dark Wave Fleet. Using the fleet Kitao started the War of Fire and Thunder, setting the Phoenix Clan against the Mantis Clan by making it appear as if the Mantis were using Maho and attacking Phoenix provinces. Kitao was killed in battle with Yoritomo Kumiko at the end of the War of Fire and Thunder in 1167. [citation needed]
