Winding Water Banquets were elaborate picnics as social gatherings which were hold alongside a pond or stream, amid the beauty of nature. Servants filled cups of sake which were placed into the water stream, which the attendants took, drank, and recited a poem. [1] During Imperial Winter Court it took place at the end of the first two weeks, before the snowfall had become regular and the streams in the palace gardens had frozen. A haiku contest was held, and the final poem of the banquet's “winner” was recorded for posterity. [2]
