Tsunegawa Lake, in the north of Naishou Province, was beautiful and easy to navigate. Along the shore Moku Mura was built. [1] Bordering both the Omikura Swamp and the Taru Mountains, the Lake received water from both and gave birth to the Itochu River. It was the primary source of fish for the whole province, and its beauty attracted poets and painters. Several monasteries were built nearby, dedicated to the most peaceful and contemplative monastic orders. On rare occasions, Tsunegawa Lake freezed over during the winter. [2]

Legends[]

Locals claimed that Kappa lived in the lake, and that an especially large specimen known as the Kappa King lived in a cave at the feet of the Taru Mountains. [3]
