Tsukino was a peasant who, during a famine, refused to turn over his entire crop to his Phoenix lord. The Daimyo questioned the defiant farmer, in turn asked who would grow the crop to feed his lord the next year if his family had starved to death. Instead of executing him for his refusal, Tsukino was ordered to become a monk for the rest of his life. [1]
