Tsi was a ronin apprentice who took the forgotten name, Tsi, for himself. [1]

Ronin[]

Tsi descended from a long line of ronin who claimed some Kaiu ancestry. He lived during the time of Hantei XXX working in a peasant village keeping the farmer's tools in order. During a journey to Otosan Uchi the artisan Kakita Harunobu saw his work, and he was impressed by the immense skill with which the man worked the metal. [2]

Servant to the Kakita[]

Several years later Haranobu learned that Tsi had worked forging katana for the Lion Clan, and returned to the village. Harunobu made Tsi his apprentice, and set him up in the Kakita palaces. With his lord's guidance, his work soon equaled those of any Crane smith, and soon was in demand by the entire family, and then by all of Rokugan. [3]

Tsi Family[]

When the Emperor commissioned a sword for his son the Crane allowed Tsi to create the saya for the blade. The Emperor was so taken with the beauty of their work that the Crane was made the personal smith of the Emperor and Tsi was given the right to a family name. [4] The historians of the court recalled that Tsi was a family name granted to ronin in the time of Hantei Genji. The Emperor proclaimed the Tsi a vassal family of the Hantei, and they would only serve the Emperor. [5]
