Toratama, born as ronin, joined the Brotherhood of Shinsei.

Toratama was a Fortunism monk of a sect which sought Enlightenment through beauty. He moved to Rugashi to tend Toratama's Silver Heaven, on behalf of his brother Kaien, a ronin bushi who lost a leg fighting for the Lion in the War of Spirits. Toratama created beautiful things, jewelry and other pretty trinkets, which became very popular among wealthy courtiers and daimyo. [1]

His brother Kaien was jealous of his success and in 1159 began to consider returning to his shop despite his injury. Toratama did not wish to leave the shop and return to the monastery. [1]
