Timeline of the Ki-Rin's Exodus

From L5r: Legend of the Five Rings

The following is a timeline of the Ki-Rin's Exodus:

[edit] Events

Ki-Rin's Exodus
  • 152, The City of Sorcerers. The Ki-Rin encounter powerful sorcerers to the west of the Ujik-hai lands. The sorcerers attack the Ki-Rin and severely wound Iuchi, who is still able to steal their gaijin books and learn meishodo.[2]
  • 153, Shinjo at the Oasis of Spirits. Shinjo discovers a strange oasis in the desert and goes to investigate while Otaku Shiko stands guard. Shiko falls asleep and wakes to find that Shinjo and the oasis have disappeared. Shinjo returns one week later, seemingly several months pregnant. She discloses nothing of her time in the oasis, save that the oasis was a passage to the Spirit Realms.[3]

Shinjo gives birth to five children, all of whom are shapechangers. The children favor human forms and that of the Ki-Rin. The children lose the shapeshifting ability after one year and must choose a final form. Four children stay as Ki-Rin while one, the strongest, becomes human. This child is Shinjo Martera.[4]

  • 223, War with the Rocs. The Ki-Rin are attacked by pale-skinned men riding gigantic rocs. The battle lasts several days and ends only when Iuchi calls down the mountainside to crush the attackers. The tactic works, but destroys the pass that the Ki-Rin crossed, blocking their path back to the Ujik-hai and Rokugan.[5]

Shinjo splits her mirror into four pieces and gives them to the leaders of the Ide, Iuchi and Otaku famiies and keeps one for herself. The families split and go their own ways, each looking for a way passage home. The families each part ways, while the Moto family accompianies the Ide family.[6]

  • 225-242, Trials and Tribulations. Each of the Ki-Rin groups encounter friends and foes over two centuries. The Otaku run across their enemies from the City of Sorcerers and discover that the sorcerers have learned to remove their hearts from their bodies and become immortal. The Iuchi combat, and then make peace with, beings known as jinn. Shinjo thwarts the Cult of Rhumal. The Ide and Moto encounter the Ashalan. The Moto later take to the seas and contact the kingdom of Merenae.[7]

In 242 the Ide, Iuchi and Otaku each see an image of Shinjo being assaulted by dark talons in their mirrors and rush to her aid. They reach the Shinjo in a swamp very similar to the Shadowlands. The Moto and Otaku fight to free the trapped Shinjo family and the Iuchi hold the darkness at bay while the Ide tend to the wounded.[8]

Once her family is safe, Shinjo orders her clan to leave her. They grudgingly agree and watch helplessly as Shinjo is swallowed by the Lying Darkness. Shinjo Yonaru, Shinjo's descendant, declares that the clan is no longer the Ki-Rin, but the Unicorn. The Unicorn continue westward.[9]

Shinjo's fan, used as proof of the Ki-Rin's identity
  • 815, Return of the Unicorn. The Unicorn make it to Rokugan, but are being pursued by Shadowlands forces. They have no time to talk and are forced to fight through the Kaiu defenses. After several more battles the Unicorn are finally accepted among the clans when Doji's fan is presented in court.[10]
