Early in the clan's history it was avoided because of the frequent storms ravaging the island. During the Clan War, a young shugenja named Yoritomo Taiken disembarked from a small kobune in the middle of a great storm. After a night of meditation, he was found alive by a Mantis kobune, which had been sent at Taiken's bride insistence. The Fortunes had commanded Taiken to do so, and he was spared because he was enacting their will. He began the construction of a temple there, which was allowed by his Lord Yoritomo. After the Battle of Oblivion's Gate Yoritomo Aramasu isolated the Yoritomo, who bore the stronger magical affinities, and ordered them to create a Shugenja School in the Tempest Island. In the temple the Mantis learned to harness the power and the fury of the sea. It taught the Yoritomo Shugenja, Orochi Riders, Storm Riders, and Storm Acolytes schools.
The only tradition was for all the shugenja to gather during great storms to protect the island.
Students were exposed to the sea winds on the cliffs, the rain of the summer storms, and earthquakes. They believed the shugenja could speak to the kami more effectively during extreme states. If they could control the kami in such state, they could control them anytime.
