Spellcraft was the study and recognition of magical effects and use of the kami. For non-shugenja, the study of spellcraft allowed merely the identification of certain spells based on their effects. For shugenja, however, the study of spellcraft provided a non-magical way of spell identification or examination. This allowed the shugenja to study both spells that were currently being cast in his or her vacinity as well as to study the residual effects of spells cast hours before, in an area or specifically targeting an individual.
