Shoko was a fierce samurai-ko who was haunted by nightmares whihc gave her visions of lifeless bodies of her dead enemies. To atone her horrible sins she retired as a monk of the Brotherhood of Shinsei at Shinsei Seido. She believed that any wrongdoing could be exonerated through enlightenment except for her own. [1]

In 1159 the presence of a nemuranai, a flat circular stone that bore a kanji no one could identify, made one of her fellow monks to be enraged. Shoko was attacked by him, until a group of samurai were able to stop him. The stone was a relic from Meido, the Realm of the Dead and its presence had awakened in several monks the memories of past lives. One brother had a past life ended by Shoko on a battlefield and had sought revenge. [1]
