Seventy years ago the Castle of Vigilance belonged to the Crane Clan, but they abandoned it when they saw a Lion army marching towards them to avenge a Crane diplomat's slight, resulting in the Night of Falling Stars. Since then the castle has changed hands more than once, but the Lion currently retain it, despite the efforts of many Kakita officers. (3E p. 293)

It is said that the river below the castle is haunted by the spirits of those who died there. Once a year, on the seventh day of the month of the Snake, the Lion bar the gates to the castle. That night the spirit of Daidoji Yurei walks the plain outside the castle, and tears any Lion he finds to bloody shreds. Since the Lion have held the castle only seven have been outside on that night, but all were found in pieces in the morning. (Crane p. 46)
