Shiba Sesai was a yojimbo of the Phoenix Clan, appointed to protect the Elemental Masters themselves. In his travels, he realized that the Isawa, whom the Shiba had sworn to protect, were at constant risk. Sesai began training his children, nephews, and nieces to protect the Isawa at all costs, even at the cost of the Shiba's honor. He founded the secretive Sesai family, serving the Isawa by preemptively eliminating threats to their power. The Council of Five and the Shiba Daimyo had no knowledge of the Sesai or their activities. [1]
