The Pure Land Shinseists believed that only through complete devotion to Shinsei could one attain the Pure Land, as they called enlightenment. They were somewhat anti-establishment in outlook, preaching that all men were equal before Shinsei and as such, were popular amongst oppressed peasantry.  Their ranks had swelled over the past twenty years or so, and more than a few samurai were nervous about the hordes of armed monks in monastery fortresses across their lands.
