Pilum was a javelin used by the Yodotai Legionnaires, who threw them to cripple the enemy frontline before they charged. It was a heavy spear of six to eight feet in length with a wooden stick with and iron center, giving it more weight. The spearhead was designed to bend after the impact, attaching it to the enemy shield or armor. It was difficult to remove it without becoming entangled, and obliged to chose between move slowly or remove the element were had been hit. [1] [2]
