On , "respectability" or "face", was behind all the Rokugani idea for politeness. Rokugan was more concerned with appearance than truth. Rokugani were respectful of each other because causing a "scene" would bring a loss of On to both parties. Discipline was very important, and when someone showed a burst of emotion, it could say they had "lost their face." [1]
