Omikuji were slips of paper which were drawn a random lot from a box, after a Rokugani made small donations to a temple or shrine. The paper usually included a general blessing followed by more specific advice. If the fortune was a poor one, the recipient might fold it up and tie it to a tree or a wooden framework in the shrine, encouraging the bad luck to wait there instead of coming with them. [1]
