Oblivion's Gate

From L5r: Legend of the Five Rings

Oblivion's Gate

Oblivion's Gate was constructed by the Trolls in their ancient city of Volturnum. The Gate was used in times of dire need to bring back a dead hero of the Trolls, who would fight the threat and then return once again to the afterlife through it. Oblivion's Gate was a link to the Spirit Realms.

[edit] The Opening of the Gate

In 1132 several reports of incarnation of ancestral spirits arose in Rokugan, pointing to a crumbling barrier between Ningen-do and other Spirit Realms. The Tenth Kami Ryoshun was found by Ginawa and Matsu Hiroru, who discovered that if Ryoshun's strength failed, the Lying Darkness would be capable of assaulting Yomi itself, bleeding the past into nothing. Despite the hopeless battle Ryoshun stood alone against the Lying Darkness and its assault upon the Spirit Realms. This led to the Battle of Oblivion's Gate. (3E p. 23)

[edit] Sealing the Gate

Oblivion's Gate was sealed and destroyed by the Master of Fire Isawa Hochiu.([1])

[edit] The Aftermath

In 1134 more and more returned spirits make their way from Yomi to the land of the living before Oblivion's Gate was sealed by Isawa Hochiu. Some were able to adjust, but many of those who returned attempted to renew old schemes and vendettas. Most of these came out of Toshigoku. This caused much chaos within the empire, even after the defeat of the Lying Darkness, and led directly to the War of Spirits and to the Second Gozoku. (3E p. 24)

Despite the gate being sealed, Rezan managed to use it again for the return of Hida Kisada from the spirit world in 1166.
