Night Herons were nocturnal birds with black, brown, white plumage, and a crow-like call. It was a common bird in the forests of the Phoenix, Crane, Unicorn lands and the Shinomen Forest. They were notorious for eating anything. They were associated with the phenomenon known as Aosaginohi or “Blue-Heron Fire”, when they glowed a pale blue in the light of a full moon. This was not due to the heron itself, but rather the phosphorescent spores that adhered to its plumage while it was fishing. [1]
