Mochi was a rice cake made by pounding mochi-gomi rice into a gooey mass, baked brown on the outside. The cake puffed up with a crispy shell; inside it remained soft and sticky. It was usually eaten during New Year's Festival. When it was served grilled with a side of sweetened red beans was known as shiruko. [1]
