Minarai, a “learn by watching,” was the middle rank of a maiko, an apprentice geisha. She dressed in subdued clothing that did not draw attention, and followed the trained geisha around to watch their examples. The okaasan tought her the many arts which geisha were expected to master. After a period of several years, the minarai would graduate and become an official maiko. [1]
