Matsu Goratu was a Lion Clan Champion of the 10th century who shamed by one of his vassal's actions shortly after his appointment, proclaimed himself unfit for the position of champion, becoming the monk Goratu.

Lion Clan Champion[]

Recently appointed as Lion Clan Champion, Goratu knew that Kitsu Kozu would marry into Doji Echiko's family, at Toshi Ranbo. He was outraged at the very idea of one of his clan marrying a Crane. Goratu came to Kozu and gave him a solemn duty, to return with the head of the Doji who presumed to marry a Lion and her father. [1]

Monk[]

Kozu leading an army seven thousand men strong assaulted and killed his beloved. The bushi presented Echiko's head to Goratu and committed seppuku to show his disdain for the Champion's demands. Goratu was shamed by his vassal's actions, stepped down, passing the championship to his Akodo advisor, and retired as a monk. [2]

Blue Chrysanthemum Village[]

Goratu raised a shrine to Benten, the Fortune of Romantic Love, in honor of Kozu and Echiko, spending the rest of his life in the village, tending the shrine. When he died, his ashes were spread around the shrine's grounds and blue chrysanthemums sprouted up from the ground, giving the village its name, Blue Chrysanthemum Village. [2]
