Kireji was the Rokugani term for a “cutting word,” which separated images in the haiku poetry form. These words were exclamations or as an emphasis accomplished through the abrupt pronunciation of the word. A haiku was not considered to be a true haiku unless it contained one of these cutting words. [1]
