River of the Hour of the Wolf

River of the Hour of the Wolf (RR)

The River of the Hour of the Wolf (RR) was named for the Battle of the Hour of the Wolf, a battle engineered by the Scorpion to force an assault on the Lion at Beiden Pass. [1]

Location[]

The river began in the Lake of Sorrows, streamed to the south [2] on the border between the Crane, Scorpion and Lion, [3] dying in the shores of the Lake of Shining Glass, later known as the Red Lake. [1] The river run through the Beiden Pass. [4]

Red waters[]

Ten thousand samurai died in the shores of the Lake of Shining Glass [1] in the hour of the wolf, just after sunset. [5] The river, which bore a different name at the time, ran thick and red with the blood of the dead and wounded. [6]

Aftermath[]

The battle was so horrific that the hour of the wolf was deemed ill-omened and the name of the hour was changed to the hour of the dog. [3] Many shugenja would spend considerable time and effort attempting to cleanse the river following the battle, although many still refuse to drink the water here from fear that any trace of the unclean remains.
