Kaiu Kabe
From L5r: Legend of the Five Rings
The Kaiu Wall, also known as the Carpenter Wall or the Kaiu Miracle, for centuries has been a very physical demarcation of the southern border of Rokugan. On its north side lies the lands of the Crab Clan, and on its south the blighted stretches of the Shadowlands. It is here that the forces of Rokugan have entrenched themselves in their eternal battle against the forces of Jigoku.

[edit] Location
The original wall was built by Hida at the behest of Hantei, and it ran along the southern Hiruma border. The Army of The Maw had invaded Crab lands and had destroyed the Hiruma castle and seemed unstoppable. The Army of The Maw was stopped at the Seigo River by Kuni Osaku, who raised the waters of the river into a wall via a magical ritual. Kuni Osaku was able to keep the magic of the ritual going for 73 days by using her own lifeforce to power the spell. The Crab called in all the favours owed to them and requested aid from the other Clans. The Crab were able to build the wall in 73 Days and finished in the year 716, The Valiant Kuni Osaku was unable to keep the spell going any longer and with her death the magical wall she had created disappated. The army of The Maw charged through the river to attack the Crab on the wall but they could not pierce the defences and were defeated, The Maw was killed and his head taken to be mounted over the gates of Kyuden Hida. The wall has since been modified repeatedly over the years until it stretched from Razor of the Dawn Castle to the beginning of the Kuni Wastes. [1] [2]
[edit] Statistics
The Carpenter Wall is over 100 feet tall with its foundations sinking many 100 feet into the soil. It is almost 30 feet thick and is held by 150,000 samurai with enough rice to feed an entire army for two years. It has strong points located at 50 yard intervals, which house siege engines. Each strong point houses one crew for the engine and a further two regiments of troops of 50-100 bushi. Between the strong points even more archers and bushi are posted. There are also 12 main towers that line the wall from end to end.[3]
[edit] Communications
Communications along the wall are Hiruma runners who will sprint a mile before handing their message over to an other runner. The system is surprisingly effective and the runners are known as the "Winged Falcons".[4]
[edit] Passage Through
Under the wall the Kaiu have constructed a maze of traps and dead ends. All Hiruma Scouts who are about to enter the Shadowlands are provided with a Kaiu guide to lead them through the mazes. The Kaiu are very loathe to show outsiders the secrets of the catacombs. [5]
[edit] Tower of Fear
At the Battle for the Last Tower, Fu Leng corrupted one of the towers of the wall. Unable to cleanse the Taint from the tower, it was ordered to be broken from the wall and to rebuild around it. The resulting Tower of Fear stands within view of a considerable portion of the wall, a grim reminder of the consequences of failure.[6]
[edit] Seventh Tower
A tower was built to replace the one that had become tainted. It is known as the Seventh Tower.[7]
