Kaien was a ronin bushi who lost a leg fighting for the Lion in the War of Spirits. His brother, the monk Toratama, left the monastery to run Kaien's shop at Rugashi. The crafts of his brother became very popular, and Kaien was jealous of his success. In 1159 Kaien began to consider returning to his shop despite his injury. Toratama did not wish to leave the shop and return to the monastery. [1]
