Isawa Moshi was a shugenja of the Phoenix Clan who changed her name to Moshi Azami as the first daimyo of the Centipede Clan. [1] She was known as the "Morning Star", [2]

Family[]

The shugenja was the daughter of Isawa Azami's eldest daughter, a man from a small, distant branch of the Isawa family who became isolated in the Valley of the Centipede, two generations earlier. [3]

Amaterasu's Blessings[]

Isawa Moshi lost the harmony of her soul so she climbed the highest mountain of the vale in order to meditate. After three days she received a vision of the Lady Sun who told Moshi the Centipede would be her acolytes. The Centipede promised to serve and worship the Sun turning to her alone and follow her will. [4] During her conversation with Amaterasu, Azami gained special knowledge of the nature of the cosmos, [5] becoming enlightened. [6]

Centipede Clan[]

Isawa Moshi and her followers built Amaterasu Seido to honor Lady Sun, and Moshi changed her name to Moshi Azami. The Phoenix let the Moshi rule their own destiny and Azami eventually became the Champion of the Centipede Clan when the Emperor granted them status of Minor Clan, [1] alongside with the Moshi family name. She took the name of the first Phoenix lord of the valley, Azami, as her own. [7] In her later years Azami was blessed with many daughters but no sons, continuing the trend in her family's line. She arranged good marriages for all her daughters, but she refused to allow their husbands to hold authority in the Centipede Clan. [6]

Demeanor[]

Azami was a warm-hearted woman but also incredibly distant. Highly orthodox and traditional, her first concern was always the worship of the Fortunes and the proper veneration of the Celestial Heavens. [6]

Morning Star[]

When the original Isawa Moshi was an extremely old woman, she walked to the cliffs overlooking the sea and used her magic to soar into the sky. No trace of her was ever found save for her obi, the Golden Obi of the Sun Goddess. [8] Her descendants claimed that she still traveled with the Lady Sun. The morning star, the last one to fade before the sun rises in the east, was said to be her. [2]
