Megami was assistant to Kuni Kessau, the curator of the Imperial Museum of Antiquities at Otosan Uchi. In 1123 he was preparing the museum for the annual visit made by the Emperor Hantei XXXVIII, who always spent there the night before his birthday. Megami was concerned that several of the older statues of creatures had several imperfections, as if they were corroding.
The museum was filled with a vast number of historical oddities, but it was famous by the highly realistic statues of different species, many of them from the time of the museum's founder, Kuni Hazu. Megami did not know the "statues" were instead petrified living animals, trapped within its own hardened shell by a magic ritual lost after Hazu's death long time ago. The spell was fading and the beasts would be released afterwards.
