Hokku was the Rokugani term for the first three lines of the tanka poetry. It was extremely important, because they contained the original imagery and set the tone for the entire poem. The composition of hokku became venerated as an art into itself, poets began to compose prepared hokku specifically for poetry contests, and sensei offered the hokku for students to complete. It developed into the haiku poetry form. [1]
