Hatsuko was the geisha that was used by Bayushi Kachiko in the attempted assassination of Akodo Toturi before the Scorpion Coup. Hatsuko had fallen in love with Toturi, and was convinced by Kachiko that the only way they could be together was in the afterlife. Hatsuko was given poison to feed to Toturi, but failed in giving him a strong enough dose. When she realised her error she fled from Toturi and threw herself off a nearby waterfall. At the time she pregnant with Kaneka, and she was saved by the Dragon of Water, who held the two in stasis until such a time when Kaneka was delivered to the gates of Shiro Akodo as an infant.
