Hantei Sotorii was the childhood name of the only surviving child of Hantei XXXVIII, and the Brother of Daigotsu. At the beginning of the Scorpion Coup, he was spirited away by the Phoenix Clan and given a hasty gempukku so that he could become Emperor of Rokugan. Since he became emperor upon his gempukku, he did not have a gempukku name.
Hantei XXXIX had been plagued by frailty all his life, and when Bayushi Kachiko, his bride and war trophy, began poisoning him, in his weakened state he became the vessel for Fu Leng to return to Rokugan. He died on the Second Day of Thunder, fully possessed by the Dark Kami and killed by the ronin Toturi and Doji Hoturi.
