Heresy of the Five Rings[]

Gorinno, Imperial Advisor[]

In 532 his father died, and Satoru succeeded him as Hantei XIII. One of his first acts was to name the monk Gorinno as Imperial Advisor, the religious leader of the movement known as Five Ring, Five Clans. Major members of both Scorpion and Crane Clans were forced to marry, paving the way for an intended full merging in one Great Clan, as proposed in Gorinno's teachings. [1]

The Hawk Clan[]

In 533 the Imperial Advisor lobbied the betrothal of the new Scorpion Clan Champion Bayushi Megumi with the widowed Crane Clan Champion, Doji Iwata. The Emperor granted Megumi to wait three years before the wedding, the traditional mourning period for fer father's death. At the end of Winter Court the Emperor proclaimed the merged Crane/Scorpion “Clan of Air” would be known as the Hawk Clan. In the next winter court, Scorpion, Phoenix, and Crane courtiers all staged a series of relentless political attacks on Gorinno without success. [3]

Gorinno's Fall[]

In 535, with only a week left before the wedding, a delegation from the Brotherhood of Shinsei named Gorinno's teachings a False Path, the Heresy of the Five Rings. Confronted, the Imperial Advisor lose his on in front of the Imperial Court, ordering his followers to destroy his enemies' temples. The Emperor turned his back and Gorinno was banished. The Order of the Five Rings was sanctioned as heretical and disbanded. [4]

Other Deeds[]

Thirty-One Ronin[]

It was Hantei XIII who confiscated Shiro Asano following the illegal seppuku of Hiruma Asano and had to deal with the fallout of the Thirty-One Ronin. [2]

Shosuro Daimyo Refused[]

The Emperor abused of his authority when he refused the service of a Shosuro Daimyo and instead selected his “more capable” second brother as family daimyo. [5]

Winter Court[]

In the year 540 the deeply religious and devout Emperor insisted to hold the Imperial Winter Court in the High House of Light, against the advice of the Dragon Clan Champion Togashi Masahito. The place was highly regarded to discuss religious and spiritual matters, but it was located at the end of a difficult path. The winter court was largely stricken from historical records due to the deaths of many guests in the mountain passes. [6]
