Hamuko was once of the Soshi. He was a shugenja working as a courtier on assignment to Kyuden Isawa. After the Scorpion Coup his life was spared but his name and titles were stripped. After gaining his ronin status his life improved and many other clans have made bids to have him join them. He refused them all because he had his own plans for his new found ronin status and none of them included selling his Soshi secrets. (Wolf pp. 15-16)
