Please note: This article is about the term for farmer-samurai. For other uses of the term, please see Goshi (disambiguation).

Goshi meant "a samurai from the country," a "farmer-samurai", in opposition to saigo or "city-samurai". The Sparrow Clan was considered a clan of goshi. [1] Originally, the term Goshi referred to samurai who had to outfit themselves for war without a daimyo's assistance. [2]
