Head of the Brotherhood of Shinsei

Gaman was the Master of the Four Temples, the post recognized as Head of the Brotherhood of Shinsei, during the First Gozoku. [1]

Dealing with Politics Edit

In 428 the Emperor Hantei Kusada ordered the monks to be their agents and spies in his effort against the conspirators, which was accepted by the Brotherhood, bound to obey the Hantei. [2] Eventually four monks were exposed during their concealed activities, and executed. Gaman was sent to prison and three sohei monasteries burnt to the ground, turning the peasantry against the Gozoku alliance. Since that time the monks, ashamed at its behaviour, tried to keep a distance from politics. [3]
