The Fuzake family, a family of the Monkey Clan, was founded in 1129, independant of the formation of that clan, mostly due to the sponsorship of the Doji family. When Toku was granted leave to form the Monkey Clan, Fuzake Garou, the family's founder, was one of the first to swear fealty to the new Champion.

Foundation of the Family Edit

The Fuzake family is currently a family of the Monkey Clan, but they were founded in 1129, independant of the formation of that clan. The family came into being largely due to the sponsorship of the Doji family. The Doji found the efforts of Yasuki Garou to tend the wounded and bring humor to Rokugan during the Clan War inspiring. ^[1]

Joining the Monkey Clan Edit

Fuzake Garou had long been a companion of the young ronin, Toku. After the formation of the Monkey Clan, and doubtless because of the dubious nature of his clan-less family, Garou swore fealty to his friend and the newly created Monkey Clan, becoming the clan's first family, as Toku would not be granted a family name for his vassals until after his death. ^[1]

Family Status Edit

The Fuzake are considered by some to be a vassal family of the Toku family, but this does not appear to be the case. First, the Fuzake were formed by Imperial edict independently of the Monkey Clan, not as a vassal of the then-nameless Toku. Second, in 1129, there was no family within the Monkey for the Fuzake to be the vassals of. Third, members of the Fuzake such as Fuzake Sekkou do not hesitate to use their family name to those outside the Monkey, despite the possible insult that would be perceived to their parent family.

The only evidence to support the theory that the Fuzake are a vassal family is that the numbers of the Fuzake and of the Monkey Clan as a whole are quite small. But as the formation of a clanless family by Toturi I was so unique, so is the position of that family today.

The Fuzake were promoted by Empress Toturi Kurako from the position of a vassal family to a full second family within the Monkey Clan in 1168 on the first day of Winter Court at Kyuden Otomo. ^[2]
