Wondrous netsuke were tiny statues of remarkable power created by shugenja, intended to protect their wearer from harm. They had one spell-like ability, which it could use at will. Most resembled the clans representative animal: crabs, cranes, dragons, lions, phoenix, scorpions, and unicorns. They were given to the children or wives of a daimyo. If their owner died far from home, such netsuke returned to their family and clan if they could, but sometimes wandered on their own, seeking another honorable samurai. [1]
