People

Rodrigo Cornejo was the illegitimate son of Esteban Cornejo and Iuchi Maiko. The scandal of his birth caused Maiko's husband to challenge Esteban to a duel. Esteban killed Maiko's husband and then leapt from the cliffs at Kyuden Gotei out of shame. [1] He was later known only as the bandit Rodrigo. [2]

Bandit[]

Rodrigo became a bandit, notably working to retrieve items for Iuchi Shahai. [3] Rodrigo raided caravans [4] in Crab and Phoenix lands in search of the Four Masks of Iuchiban that unlock the Tomb of Iuchiban. [5] Three of the masks were found, [6] and the first of them was the Third Mask. Shahai gave Rodrigo an emperor's ransom in gold for the mask. [7] The Kuni Witch Hunters and the Asako Inquisitors chased Rodrigo. [3]

Seeking his Origins[]

Rodrigo struggled to learn what he could about his gaijin blood. Through sporadic correspondences dispatched through the Burning Sands, he made contact with his great-grandfather, Calixto Cornejo, in 1164. [1]

Serving the Ashalan[]

Rodrigo was eventually made a servant of the Ashalan [1] who were allied with Bayushi Atsuki, the leader of the destroyed Shadowed Tower, and currently Gozoku leader. Atsuki used Rodrigo to contact his half-brother, the explosive master Alhundro Cornejo. [8] Alhundro was supposed dead in the Second Day of Thunder, but he had become a minion of the Shadows. [9] The memory of Alhundro was partly recovered when he saw his half-brother, and Atsuki convinced him to destroy the Emperor Toturi III and the Imperial Court, to be replaced by the Gozoku members. [8] In 1165 Alhundro was the arsonist of the Fires of Toshi Ranbo, which was partially fouled by his familiar Esteban Cornejo [9]

Death[]

In 1166 Rodrigo met his end in an Ashalan hideout in the Plains Above Evil when he set off a suicide bomb in an unsuccessful attempt to kill his cousin Esteban Cornejo. [1]
