Eels began life as small yellowish freshwater creatures called unagi, residing in shallow streams and rivers. Over time, unagi grew, their color changed to silver, and they migrated out to sea to become saltwater fish known as anago, which fed upon other fish. They were considered a delicacy in landlocked regions. Eel skin was sometimes tanned into leather, and their blood was a deadly toxin.
