Doji Suzume was the namesake of the Suzume family of the Sparrow Clan. He later took the name of Suzume Onegano to honor his father, Doji Onegano.

Demeanor Edit

Suzume was a somewhat witless young man who tended to speak before thinking. He was a popular youth, being well-humored, likable, and quick to laugh, but he was not bright by any means. Showing little aptitude for politics, his father Doji Onegano often brought Suzume with him to courts and negotiations, hoping the experience would rub off on the boy. [1]

Crane-Crab War Edit

The Sparrow Clan was actually granted to his father, after the elder Crane was ousted from the Crane Clan after Suzume had made an errant comment in open court during the negotiations over the Yasuki War's conclusion. The comment had been believed to be Onegano plotting against his Champion, and his favor with peasants grew substantially. Inevitably the Crane Clan Champion Doji Raigu was outraged at the apparent display of disloyalty, and told Onegano to leave the clan and create a Minor Clan if he was displeased with the Champion's leadership. [2] [3] [4]

Sparrow Clan Edit

The Emperor Hantei Kusada gave Onegano land stripped from the Crab and Crane, and many of the peasants that had thought so highly of him followed him to those new lands. This allowed a final conclusion to the war and removed a source of distraction and embarrassment for the Crane. Onegano retired shortly after to a monastery, leaving Suzume to lead the new Sparrow Clan. [2] [3] [4]

Sparrow Clan Champion Edit

At the age of seventeen, Doji Suzume found himself the new leader of a minor clan. One of his first tasks was to build a castle in the Suzume Hills. He was aided by his aunt, Doji Masako. [5] He took the name of Suzume Onegano to honor his father. [6]

Sacred Duty Edit

In the year 410 the Imperial Chancellor assigned the Sparrow Clan to guard and protect the Golden Sun Plains, bordering their lands. It was a subtle insult, as they were already protected by Imperial Decree forbidding anyone from farming them. Suzume embraced this new task to the heart, despite it was wholly superfluous. [7]
