|Please note: This article is about the wife of Daigotsu Kanpeki. For other uses of the term, please see Machiko (disambiguation).|
Machiko was a young courtier who offended the son of an important Otomo lord with a flirt attempt gone wrong, intended as a game of court. As punishment she was assigned as a guide for Daigotsu Kanpeki during one of his yearly visits to the Imperial City. The Spider Clan Champion knew immediately that Machiko's assignment was meant as a punishment, because he deemed her too young for such a duty. He seemed to like her, however, much more than her senior Otomo colleague. The young courtier was offered a place among Kanpeki's entourage during the time he conducted business in Rokugan, but outside of Toshi Ranbo.

Imperial Heir Selected Edit
Eventually, the Empress Iweko I went in seclusion to decide her official heir. She decided there was no reason not to adhere to the tradition of primogeniture, proclaiming Seiken as the new Emperor. Machiko pondered with her husband that Seiken would revoke his mother's agreement, and the charter of the Spider Clan would be undone.
Machiko's Sacrifice Edit
When Iweko II threatened to take the leadership of the Spider Clan away from Daigotsu Kanpeki and her husband declared war on the Empire in 1200, Machiko was with child. After the birth of her daughter she visited Kanpeki in a temple to Daigotsu where he attempted to gain Jigoku's Blessing. Apparently, no blood sacrifice and no pleading to Daigotsu was successful. So Machiko told her husband of their daughter and offered her life as a sacrifice in order for Kanpeki to receive the Taint. She was killed by Kanpeki, who thereupon became a tainted monster full of rage and hatred.
