Daidoji Kichibei was a dishonorable minor lord of the Crane Clan. He began to smuggle opium from a criminal cartel through his caravans. The operative was discovered by the yojimbo assigned to escort the caravans, Daidoji Takuan, who immediately reported to Kichibei. The powerful Crane offered Takuan a share of the profits to keep quiet. Takuan struck Kichibei across the face. [1] Takuan's lord drew his sword and demanded the young samurai to kneel before him, but Takuan refused saying that he could not serve a weak man. Takuan knocked his lord to the floor as he left in disgust in search of his own future. [2]
