The tsuba took the form of a thick ring supported by over half a dozen narrow pillars issuing from the body of the blade. The was covered with a thick strip of silk, velvet, or cotton woven around the handle. A short, tightly woven cord, was often attached to the butt. Many samurai referred to this as the weapon's "tail."
