A chui was in charge of a unit and fell under the command of their superior officer, a taisa. A chui commanded from four to twenty gunso and their troops, a unit that could vary in size from 20 to 8,000 soldiers depending on the size of each squad, which was led by a nikutai. Army size varied considerably based upon a number of factors.
Chui were usually a promoted from the ranks of the gunso who showed a firm understanding of tactics and strategy in addition to being experienced leaders. Chuis were sometimes awarded a small castle along with their rank near where their unit was posted.
