Hida Chono was a Crab Clan samurai. Chono served as a military commander on the Kaiu Wall from the time of the Clan War through the end of the War of Spirits. When his age caught up with him, the samurai retired and became the monk Chono.
With a large number of sensei among the Crab and fewer attacks on the Wall, the hope among Crab leadership was that Chono would represent a new hope for Crab samurai: retirement after a lifetime of service. Chono was allowed to join the monastery at the White Temple, where he would eventually become head monk in 1158. In that time he became an invaluable advisor to Hiruma Hijime, the White Temple's samurai commander.
