The Biwa of Kakita was made for Lady Doji by Kakita. He carved it out of a piece of driftwood essentially bringing "life from the dead" and completing the first quest for her hand in marriage. It is a deceptively simple looking instrument, it's wood shining from generations of care. (Crane p. 119)
