Bincho-zumi was a variety of charcoal recognizable due to its white color, made from a specific kind of oak, burned without exposure to the air and then steamed in a secretive process. It was produced almost exclusively in Phoenix lands. While burning, bincho-zumi's whiteness intensified, resembling bleached bones as it slowly reduced to cinders. It contained very little ash, making it the preferred in Rokugan for its purity, because it burned very cleanly with little or no smoke, giving off no scent while burning. This charcoal was rather expensive and always in demand. [1]
