|Please note: This article is about the Hundred Stances sensei. For other uses of the term, please see Sawao (disambiguation).|
Sawao was a bushi of low status and distressingly numerous enemies. He was fleeing when he stumbled upon a set of scrolls in a desolate plain. He was fascinated by the texts about kenjutsu written by Oshiro, the forgotten founder of the Hundred Stances style, and Sawao resolved to dedicate his life to them.
Sawao retired from the Scorpion Clan and set out to build the Dojo of a Hundred Stances near the spot where he found the scrolls. Due to his low reputation as warrior, only a handful of close friends and curious retirees followed him. A couple of students who were genuinely skilled swordsmen allowed Sawao to further develop the style.
