Asako Hu Xiang was a former member of the Ki-Rin Clan who lived in the 9th century. Upon returning from the Burning Sands he joined the Henshin and the Phoenix Clan. He led twelve shugenja [1] who died battling a powerful evil [2] gaki, the Shimushigaki, in 830. [3]
Bells of the Dead[]
The names of the shugenja were marked in each of the bells with a kanji, [1] and a shrine, the Bells of the Dead, was built at the place where they died to honor their sacrifice. It was said that so long as the bells were rung regularly the soul of the shugenja would prevent [4] the returning of the Shimushigaki. [5]
Shimushi Put to Rest Again[]
In 1088 [3] the gaki managed to awaken, entering the soul of Asako Nakiro. The spirit manipulated Nakiro who alongside a former kolat, Daidoji Dajan, formed the Dajan's Kolat. [6] Hu Xiang's bell had been removed from the shrine, but a group of samurai eventually recovered it, [5] and managed to put the gaki back to sleep [6] with the aid of Hu Xiang's spirit, who appeared to the samurai showing where to find Dajan's fortress. [7]
