Asahina Maryoku was a shugenja of the Crane Clan.

Kagaku Master Edit

Maryoku was extremely talented with Kagaku, and a renowned artist of fireworks and other light displays. He began to seek enlightenment standing in the hottest part of the flames. Maryoku believed that only when he was within the heart of flame, would he know the ultimate secret of fire. [1]

Tragedy Edit

In one of these fugue states, the flames went out of control and set the house ablaze. His wife Asahina Hiyako died, and his son Asahina Hiya was scarred. When Maryoku woke up from his daze, he was driven mad by the realization of what he had done. [1]

Death Edit

Maryoku went deeper in his studies, researching a potion that would ignite when it made contact with water. He and his students were forced to make one of his light displays during a wedding. Maryoku was angered that he had been called away from his research, and poured some of his potion into a nearby koi pond. The outcome was a burned house, many guests injured, the betrothed incinerated, and Maryoku himself ablaze. [2]

Aftermath Edit

His followers were cast out of the Crane Clan by Asahina Handen, and eventually joined the Tamori as the Hiasobi vassal family. His son Hiya became the first daimyo. [2]
